Street art in Curaçao includes hundreds of murals, sculptures and installations in Willemstad and beyond, partly commissioned and partly made spontaneously.
The oldest mural is probably Groot Santa Martha by Luigi Pinedo from 1944, under a viaduct. The murals by Ras Elijah (pseudonym of Earl Nicolaas) in Scharloo and Otrobanda are also among the oldest. In 1996, Ras Elijah captured the events of May 30, 1969 on a mural in Bayonet Street, an alleyway in Otrobanda. It is a portrait gallery where Papa Godett, Amador Nita and Stanley Brown are depicted alongside Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and Haile Selassie.
In 1997 and 1998 he made two large murals in Kurá Hulanda. Since the tens of the 21st century, street art has also been used for urban renewal and awareness. The murals in Otrobanda are an appealing example of this. Every year during the Kaya Kaya festivals, artworks are added, both by professional artists and by uneducated local residents.
